Nisha is a second year at UCLA majoring in Public Affairs with a concentration in Urban and Regional Studies. Her involvement in social work began with her high school debate career which exposed her to various social and political issues, leading her to begin her first internships at grassroots organizations in the San Jose area, such as the San Jose Peace and Justice Center.
During her time at UCLA, Nisha served as the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Director for USAC’s External Vice President’s office where she worked closely with the undocumented community on campus to serve their needs both at UCLA and off-campus by lobbying for pro-immigration legislation. She came to learn about iACT through her school, the Luskin School of Public Affairs and is completing her senior capstone project with iACT.
This summer and the subsequent academic year, Nisha hopes to use her writing skills to help the refugee community and contribute to the many ongoing projects iACT has, such as developing frameworks for refugee educational programs.
iACT because... this organization focuses on community empowerment within refugee camps in order to build long term sustainability instead of using the classic top down approach that reinforces the power dynamic between the West and refugees.
